Routes We Cover

Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)

The main points-based residence pathway for skilled workers. Key details:

  • You need a minimum of 6 skilled resident points to qualify
  • The process starts with an Expression of Interest (EOI) — free to submit
  • If selected, you're invited to submit a full residence application
  • Government fee: $6,450 per family
  • Processing time: 5–14 months total from EOI to decision

Important change: The SMC system is being replaced in August 2026 with two new pathways — Skilled Work Experience and Trades & Technician. If you're considering SMC, timing your application matters. We can advise on whether to apply now or wait for the new system.

Green List

Fast-track residence for people working in occupations New Zealand needs most. If your role is on the Green List, you may be able to go straight to residence without going through SMC — significantly reducing processing time and complexity.

Residence from Work

Already on a Work to Residence visa? After 24 months in qualifying employment, you can apply for residence. This pathway suits people who came to New Zealand on a talent or long-term skill shortage visa. We handle the transition and make sure you apply within the right window.

Family Residence

Joining family already in New Zealand — partners, parents, dependent children, or siblings. Each category has different requirements around income, sponsorship, and relationship evidence. We'll guide you through the right one.

Watch Out For

  • The SMC system is changing in August 2026. Whether to apply under the current rules or wait for the new pathways depends on your specific situation. Get advice early.
  • Get NZQA qualification assessments done early. If your qualifications are from overseas, NZQA assessment takes weeks and you'll need it before your application can proceed.
  • INZ scrutinises job offers closely. Your employment must be genuine, ongoing, and match the skill level claimed. Paper arrangements are detected and declined.
